Advantages
- Great monitor overall: very responsive (sub 1ms pixel response time), solid combination of resolution, size, pixel density and refresh rate. Solid HDR experience due to it being an OLED. The build quality is very, it looks very nice as well.
- For me the advantage of the monitor is also that it has an LG remote. Way easier to navigate various menus as opposed to your typical monitor having a directional toggle.
- Screen coating is a plus for me personally, because it diminishes the effects of bright light reflections when they are directly behind you (for instance during the day if you have a window behind you).
- My preference has always been about a combination response time, resolution (1440p is easier to push higher framerates) and high refresh rate (240hz is amazingly smooth). This monitor does that splendidly. Also, similar products from ASUS, Corsair and Acer were available at a significantly higher price than this one from LG. I was initially planning to grab ASUS because it was brighter on average and had a few minor advantages, but it was almost 300 EUR more expensive for the same panel, which just isn't worth it. So by a combination of factors, I think this monitor is an extremely solid pickup for anyone looking for a crisp and smooth high-refresh gaming experience with an added benefit of good HDR capabilities.
- HDMI 2.1 with full 48Gbps bandwidth is supported - this a plus because it supports its native resolution and refresh rate without need for compression. Other monitors with the same panel do not have that option (though to be fair displayport 1.4 with DSC is just fine for this as well, you'll hardly notice the difference). This is unlikely to be a dealbreaker for anyone, though
Disadvantages
- OLEDs are typically not very bright, so this monitor also has this. Compared to a typical macbook screen, you can clearly see that it's not bright enough. However, you get used to that fairly quickly + if you game during evenings in a dim-lit room (or even in a lit room, just not when the light is directly in front of the panel), you'll not notice anything.
- Also, OLEDs do have a potential issue with burn-in. But then again, if you're buying this monitor for desktop usage, you're not making an optimal choice. In content consumption this monitor is superb
Comment
I've ran this monitor for a few weeks now. It works just fine when connected to a macbook as well via an adapter (obviously can't push 240hz in that mode). I'm very happy with the purchase and strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a premium gaming monitor to enjoy a high-performance PC with the HDR gaming potential as well.
