AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D: 12-Core CPU With 2nd-Gen 3D V-Cache
The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D from the Granite Ridge processor family features twelve CPU cores based on the "Zen 5" architecture. Designed specifically for gaming enthusiasts and content creators, this processor offers an unbeatable combination of uncompromising gaming performance and outstanding energy efficiency.
Thanks to its new architecture and second-generation AMD 3D V-Cache, it delivers more power than its popular predecessor, reaching an impressive 5.5 GHz boost clock. The cache, positioned under the chip, ensures better cooling and stability while enabling overclocking for X3D processors for the first time!
Full Support for PCIe 5.0 and All AM5 Motherboards
Paired with an AMD X870(E) chipset, the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D fully supports the PCI Express 5.0 standard, which is twice as fast as PCIe 4.0. PCIe 5.0 is backwards compatible and can be used with all expansion cards from previous generations.
All Ryzen 9000 processors use the AM5 platform and are designed for use with compatible AMD chipsets. However, thanks to the same socket, this CPU is also compatible with older X670(E) and B650(E) chipsets, provided you update to the latest BIOS version.
AMD's Energy-Efficient Zen 5 Architecture
The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D features twelve physical CPU cores that, thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), can handle two tasks simultaneously. This effectively doubles the number of processing cores to 24 with the additional virtual cores. The Ryzen 9 processor operates with a high base clock of 4.4 GHz, which dynamically adjusts to the workload using Precision Boost 2 and increases up to 5.5 GHz Turbo within the 120-watt Thermal Design Power (TDP).
The I/O chiplet is manufactured using 6-nanometre FinFET technology and provides 28 PCIe lanes, with four lanes reserved for the motherboard chipset and NVMe SSDs. This leaves 16 lanes for GPU communication, while additional PCIe lanes for storage, expansion cards, and peripherals are available depending on the motherboard chipset.
The CPU's integrated memory controller supports high-speed DDR5 memory in dual-channel mode, with or without ECC error correction, at a native clock speed of 5,600 MT/s. Higher speeds are achievable through manual overclocking and AMD EXPO performance profiles.
AMD's 3D V-Cache Technology: Optimised for High-End Gaming
The second generation of AMD 3D V-Cache is a milestone. AMD has surpassed the limitations of the previous generation, opening up new possibilities for gamers.- New Cache Position: Previously located on top of the chip, the cache is now positioned under the core chiplet (CCD). This improves heat dissipation and enhances cooling efficiency.
- Higher Clock Speeds and Overclocking Potential: With better heat control, significantly higher clock speeds are possible. The Ryzen 9 9900X3D officially supports overclocking.
- Improved Energy Efficiency: Thanks to the powerful Zen 5 cores, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D benefits from all efficiency optimisations.
The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D comes equipped with an impressive 128 MB of Level 3 Cache.
Why Is the Ryzen 9 9900X3D So Good for Gaming?
When the cache is fully utilised, data is offloaded to system memory. However, accessing RAM takes significantly longer than accessing the CPU’s built-in cache. Thanks to its large 3D V-Cache, this processor can quickly access far more data, accelerating calculations. As a result, your system can execute more actions in less time. This is particularly beneficial for computationally intensive games—more frames per second ultimately provide a smoother, better gaming experience.
Note: To fully utilise PCI Express 5.0 features, an AM5 motherboard with an AMD X870(E), X670(E), or B650(E) chipset and an appropriate BIOS update is required.
